On the Big Island it’d be Volcanoes National Park and the vast expanses of lava. Between the two, the Big Island is more interesting, while Kauai is more beautiful.The Big Island is way less busy, and the Kohala Coast resort area is sunny and beachy with way more open and unbuilt shoreline than the Maui resort areas. (Avoid the Hilton Waikoloa though.) Maui has more choices and entertainment in the way of shows and tours, but honesty, the Big Island has plenty. You can plan to spend 5 of your 7 nights on the beachy Kohala Coast on the Big Island and 2 in Volcano to see VNP. If there happens to be lava you can see while you are there, then you had a once-in-a-lifetime experience.For me this is the breakdown. The Big Island had the best snorkeling in Hawaii, Kauai the worst. Hotels like the Mauna Lani are much more Hawaiiana than most Kauai offerings. But for topside "quintessential" beauty, Kauai has the Big Island beat all kinds of ways, especially the north shore which will be at its best in summer.

In my experience, food trucks are not a Thing on the Big Island ~ especially in the North Kohala vicinity where the OP is staying. Best bet from there is to go to Seafood Bar, Kohala Burger & Taco, and Da Fish House, if & when they're open. ~ …

SonomaGal: Yes small town w/ easy beach access doesn't really exist on the Big Island. Kona is the closest but really touristy. With only 4 days on the Island I would suggest focusing on one region (unless you really like driving allot). Waiemea or Waikoloa area might be spots to stay.The hotels, Roy's, maybe Merriman's although they can be one that closes for employees, maybe Bamboo Restaurant, Kileauea Lodge, Cafe Pesto in Hilo, Hilo Bay Cafe.
